Installation of a Solar Photovoltaic System in a Domestic Property


After experiencing an increase in fuel bills Mr and Mrs Brannigan started looking into how they could reduce their outgoings.

UCS were contacted to provide a quotation for the supply and installation of a solar photovoltaic system.

The house has a south facing roof to the rear of the building. Due to the position of an existing velux window, the best available solution was a 1.295kWp System comprising of 7 solar panels. The projected savings are around £536.00 per year, which equates to £13,400.00 over the 25 years of the feed in tariff scheme. These calculations are based on generation quantities taken from Government SAP 2005 calculations.

Mr and Mrs Brannigan stand to make a considerable profit over the life of the system. The quote was accepted, contract signed, a method statement and risk assessment was prepared, using the survey notes taken during the initial quotation survey, and the Installation date was agreed for the 23rd August 2010. Materials were ordered from the UCS approved supplier’s, the fixed scaffolding erection was arranged for Friday 20th August.

Monday 23rd August

The installation engineers arrived at Mr and Mrs Brannigan’s house at 8.00am and started the external works on the roof, fitting the mounting brackets and frame for mounting the Solar modules (PV Array). By 5.00pm on the first day all the external works were complete, the DC cables from the solar modules were into the roof space and the DC isolator switch was installed.

Tuesday 24th August

The engineers installed the inverter into the roof space along with the AC isolators and Migration meter. The DC and AC isolators allow the system to be manually isolated from the grid. This is required during installation and maintenance. The DC isolator isolates the DC power produced from the array. The AC isolator isolates the converted AC power from the inverter. The cable connecting the Generation meter in the roof void to a circuit breaker in the building mains consumer box, on the ground floor was installed and connected.

A second AC isolator switch was installed at the mains board, this allows electrical maintenance staff to isolate the PV system without having to go into the loft. All information and warning labels necessary for the Solar power system were stuck on or attached to the components. The installation guidelines for any MCS accredited company demands that information and warning labels are attached as per the system installation procedures. These are some but not all labels that should be on a PV system after installation.

The system was installed, commissioned, and tested by the end of the second day. The operation and maintenance documentation pack was issued to Mr and Mrs Brannigan on the Wednesday, the pack contained the completed G83 form, system schematic all the material specification sheets, test certificates, system shut down and start up procedure and all the Distribution Network Operators (DNO) forms required for connection to the grid. These documents are required to allow Mr and Mrs Brannigan to receive payment of the feed in tariff and to receive payment for any exported surplus electricity fed back into the grid.
